AESCHYLUS (525/524-456/455 BC) The first of Athens’ three great tragic poets of the 5th century BC, Aeschylus was born in Eleusis, Attica and was nurtured by Athenian democracy, as shaped by Cleisthenes’ reforms. With the new dramatic conventions that he introduced, i.e. a second actor and smaller choral parts, Aeschylus is largely credited with giving Greek tragedy its standard form and with elevating it to artistic heights. He won 13 victories in the dramatic festivals of Athens. His Persae (472 BC) is Europe’s earliest surviving play, while his masterpiece, the Oresteia trilogy, is seen as being to drama what the Parthenon is to architecture. He died in Gela, Sicily. In the epitaph that he had composed for himself, he chose to be remembered for taking part in the battle of Marathon, without a single allusion to his achievements as a poet.

SOCRATES (469-399 BC) Socrates, the Athenian philosopher, was one of the most prominent figures of ancient Greek culture. He devoted himself to discussing philosophy with people from all walks of life in the city’s public venues, but, unlike the sophists, refused payment for his teachings. As he left no written work, knowledge of his teachings has reached us through the writings of his students, foremost amongst them Plato. Socrates represents a turning point in philosophy, breaking with the earlier cosmologies to focus on man. Convinced that “no one voluntarily does evil” and seeking to found ethics on knowledge, Socrates would steer his interlocutors towards uncovering the truth that all men innately possess, with his skilful use of dialectic, maieutic and inductive methods of inquiry, the cornerstones of logic. His penetrating criticism of the moral conventions of Athenian society, however, was misunderstood. As a result, he was brought to trial in his old age on charges of impiety and sentenced to death. Faithful to his convictions to the very end, he turned down pleas to flee from Athens, preferring instead to submit to the verdict handed down by his city.

Hippocrates of Cos is regarded as the father of Western medicine for basing the art of healing on rational principles and liberating it from divine causality and superstition. He perceived man as a whole entity, and health as resulting from multiple factors, including environmental and dietary ones. The Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of works left by Hippocrates and his students, deals with practically all branches of medicine and systematically records clinical symptoms and treatments, always in line with the principle “to do good, or [at least] to do no harm”. The Hippocratic Oath remains the guide to medical ethics and practice to this day.

The second, chronologically, of the three great tragedians of classical Athens, Sophocles was the most popular of the three and the most awarded in dramatic festivals. He gave tragedy its final form, by adding a third actor (Aeschylus had added the second), and by introducing painted stage sets. He wrote over 120 tragedies, only seven of which have survived in complete form. The tragic in Sophocles stems from man’s powerlessness in the face of the inscrutable will of the gods and fate. Oedipus, Antigone, Electra are some of his archetypal tragic figures who, despite their downfall, preserve their moral stature and dignity. Very pious, dedicated to his native city and having performed more than his fair share of civic and military duties, Sophocles was also an accomplished personality and a model citizen of the classical age.

A student of Plato’s and tutor to Alexander the Great, Aristotle was one of the great figures of ancient Greek philosophy. Born in Stageira, Chalkidiki, Aristotle spent many years in Athens, where, after leaving Plato’s Academy, he later founded a school of his own, the Lyceum. Distancing himself from the idealism of the Academy, Aristotle believed that true knowledge should be acquired through empirical observation and sense perception. His work laid the foundations for numerous disciplines, such as logic, physics, biology, psychology, ethics, rhetoric and political science. His influence was immense until the Renaissance, spreading across major civilisations, from the Arab to the Western European.

Euripides was the youngest of the three great Athenian tragedians of the 5th century B.C. and, as has been said, the most tragic. He reached manhood during the classical age of rhetoric, sophistic and philosophy, living at a time of rapid changes and major achievements in all spheres of culture. Influenced by the new currents, Euripides attempted a novel and bolder treatment of the myths on which the plot of Greek tragedies was almost always built, raising moral questions that are still difficult to answer today. A distinctive characteristic of his art was the realistic portrayal of his heroes and their passions. The fact that Euripides was awarded fewer victories at the dramatic festivals of Athens than his counterparts Sophocles and Aeschylus suggests that his radical approach caused unease among the Athenian public. Towards the end of his life, Euripides retired to the court of Archelaos, king of Macedon, where he wrote his last masterpiece, the tragedy Bacchae.

Archimedes was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily, where he lived most of his life and died in 212 BC during the city’s capture by the Romans. It is very likely that young Archimedes studied in Alexandria, Egypt, the centre of learning for the Greek world. He is remembered as the greatest mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer of his time. According to the famous anecdote, when Archimedes figured out the physical law of buoyancy (“Archimedes’ principle”) while in his bath, such was his excitement that he forgot to dress and took to the street naked, shouting “eureka”. He pushed the boundaries in a number of fields, primarily in mathematics with his method for accurately approximating the value of π (“Archimedes’ constant”), but also in engineering with his law of the lever and in hydraulics with his major breakthroughs. He is credited with numerous inventions, such as the hydraulic screw pump (known as the Archimedes’ screw) and the compound pulley. He also famously used his ingenuity to help defend his city against the Romans, building a number of innovative defensive devices to destroy their warships.

In the summer of 480 BC, some 7,000 Greek troops under Leonidas, king of Sparta, tried to halt the advance of the invading Persian army, led by Xerxes. Though vastly outnumbered, they decided to take up position at the straits of Thermopylae, which commanded the passage to mainland Greece. When the Persian king invited them to surrender their arms, Leonidas famously countered «Μολών λαβέ» (“come and take them”). Using the narrow pass to their advantage, the Greeks managed to hold their ground for two days, until they were betrayed by Ephialtes, who showed the Persians a mountain track leading them behind the Greek lines. On the third day, Leonidas, realising that the battle was lost, dismissed the troops of the other Greek cities, but chose to stay behind with his elite guard of 300 Spartans, the helots and the remaining Lacedemonians. They were joined by 700 Thespians, who also opted to stay, and they all fell on the battlefield. With their courageous last stand, Leonidas and his comrades inspired the Greeks to continue their fight against the Persians, setting an everlasting example of heroism and self-denial.

George Gordon Byron (London 1788-Missolonghi 1824) was an emblematic figure of European Romanticism and one of the most important poets of the 19th century. From a very young age, he embraced liberal and philhellenic ideals. His Grand Tour of the Mediterranean in 1809 brought him to Greece, to which he dedicated the second canto of his defining poetic work, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. The outbreak of the Greek Revolution in 1821 set fire to Byron’s romantic soul. He ultimately moved to Greece in 1823 in order to take part in the struggle and settled in Missolonghi, where he spent much of his fortune on setting up military and naval units. However, he was never to see action, as his life was cut short on 19 April 1824, following a serious illness. His untimely death was a tragic loss and was deeply mourned by the Greeks, but at the same time boosted philhellenic sentiment around the world.

Euclid is considered the father of geometry. He lived in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I and must have flourished about 300 BC. His central work was the Elements, where he presented the fundamental concepts and principles of geometry and, based on five indemonstrable postulates or axioms (e.g. two points determine one and only one straight line), managed to summarise the geometric wisdom of the time in a comprehensible and coherent system, named Euclidean geometry in his honour. His influence was so immense that it was not until the 19th century that a non-Euclidean geometry was developed. He also wrote Optics, Catoptrics, Conics, etc. They say that when Ptolemy once asked him if there was in geometry any shorter way than that of the Elements, he replied that there was no royal road to geometry.

Archimedes’ screw is a brilliant device used for raising and transporting water. Archimedes is said to have invented it during his stay in Egypt, probably in view of farmers’ need to utilise Nile water for irrigation purposes. It is essentially a hollow tube that contains a spiral or helix that winds its way up. When the lower end of the tube is placed in water and the screw is turned, either manually or mechanically, water trapped within its coils rises until it reaches the top of the tube and pours out into irrigation ditches. The invention is described by the Roman architect Vitruvius, while Diodorus Siculus says that it was also used for draining water from mines. For its simplicity and ingenuity, the device has been popular over time and is still used today in similar applications.

Born in Miletus, on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, Thales (c. 624-540 BC) was the first known Greek mathematician, the first Greek philosopher and one of the seven sages of antiquity. Breaking with mythological interpretations and believing that the world can be explained as a set of natural processes, he considered water, origin of all, in the spirit of natural philosophy that he pioneered. Thales excelled in cosmology, astronomy, physics and geometry. One of his best known contributions to mathematics is Thales’ theorem, or basic proportionality theorem. Thales was said to have calculated the height of the pyramids and predicted the solar eclipse of 585 BC. According to an anecdote, Thales fell into a well while stargazing. His importance as a thinker is enormous, as he was first in the long tradition of European philosophy and introduced the mathematical study of natural phenomena.

Charles Nicolas Fabvier (1782-1855) was a distinguished officer of the French army. He served under Napoleon and took part in his campaigns. Dismissed from service after the Bourbon restoration, he decided in 1823 to come to Greece and assist in the War of Independence, persuading many experienced Bonapartists to join him. Following the crushing defeat of the Philhellenes’ Battalion led by Karl Normann, Fabvier undertook to recruit and train regular troops, which excelled in several battles. He learned to speak fluent Greek and was very popular with his men. He was perhaps the most honest and selfless of all philhellenes. In a bold move, on 30 November 1826 he managed to break through the lines of the besieging Ottoman troops and relieve the garrison of the Acropolis, which he defended until the surrender of the stronghold in 1827. In recognition of his services, the Third National Assembly of Troezen (1827) made him an honorary Greek citizen, while King Otto later awarded him with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer.

Laskarina Pinotsi (better known as Bouboulina, after her second husband’s surname) was born in Constantinople in 1771 and grew up on the maritime island of Spetses. She inherited an immense fortune from her two husbands, Dimitrios Giannouzas and Dimitrios Bouboulis, and spent it all to finance the Greek Revolution. She was one of the few women to be admitted to the Friendly Society (Philike Etaireia), which masterminded the revolt. As soon as she was initiated, she started to procure military equipment, also building the 18-gun brig Agamemnon as flagship of her flotilla. At the same time, she recruited and paid for a private army of fellow islanders from Spetses. Bouboulina’s flotilla participated in the siege of Nafplio, where she later settled on land donated by the Greek government in recognition of her services. She also took part in the sieges of Monemvasia and Tripolitsa. However, after the civil war, her plea to the government to release its imprisoned opponent Theodoros Kolokotronis led to her banishment to Spetses. She was killed there in a family feud in 1825.

Count Santorre di Santarosa (1783-1825) was a military officer and politician from Piedmont, Italy, and an ardent patriot, who fought many battles for Piedmont’s independence from Napoleonic France. A champion of Italy’s unification, he was inspired by democratic-liberal ideas that brought him into conflict with autocratic regimes; he joined the Carbonari, and in 1821 played a leading role in a constitutional movement in Piedmont. After the failure of the revolt, he was arrested but escaped, ending up in Great Britain, where he came in contact with the London Philhellenic Committee. Profoundly moved by the Greeks’ struggle for freedom, he decided to travel to Greece in 1824. He joined the Greek army as a simple soldier with the alias Derossi. In 1825, Santarosa participated in the Pylos campaign against Ibrahim, landing on Sphakteria island on 7 May. In the battle that followed on the next day, fighting heroically, he was killed, along with many others.

Zeus, “father of gods and men” according to Homer, was the supreme god of the Greek pantheon. According to prevailing tradition, he was born in a cave on Mount Ida in Crete, where his mother Rhea had sought refuge to save him from his father, Cronos. Zeus had to battle the older deities (the Titans and Giants) in order to prevail. The ancient Greeks imagined him having his abode on Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain, while a number of major sanctuaries to Zeus existed across Greece (Olympia, Nemea, Dodona). Over time, Zeus evolved from a punishing thunderbolt-wielding god into a guarantor of the cosmic order, providence and justice, with such epithets as xenios (patron of hospitality), ikesios (protector of supplicants), themistios (patron of right) and soter (saviour).

Their victorious outcome for Greece led to the liberation from Ottoman rule of historic Greek territories, doubling the size of the Greek State. The First Balkan War saw the liberation of Epirus, western and central Macedonia, as well as the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, while the Second Balkan War enabled Greece to formally secure its possession of Thessaloniki, previously liberated during the First Balkan War, and eastern Macedonia. A main characteristic of the Balkan Wars was the striking speed of operations. The Greek victories, largely reflecting the previous modernisation of the Greek State, as well as the unity and high morale of the Greek people, provided a lasting legacy for generations to come. Since its foundation in Hellenistic times, Thessaloniki has always been an important centre of Hellenism. Thanks to its strategic position, the city assumed an increasingly pivotal role in the Balkans as a multi-ethnic and multicultural crossroads, both during Byzantine times and later under Ottoman rule. Thessaloniki was recaptured by the Greeks during the First Balkan War on 26 October 1912 and was formally ceded to Greece at the Balkan War with the signing of the Treaty 28 July 1913. Liberation would soon usher in a new era of progress and growth, especially after the Asia Minor Disaster of 1922 and the massive influx refugees, who would give new momentum and social life of the city. The obverse of the collector gold coin features a circular gold foil with a rosette at its centre, most probaly the adornment of a gearment (ancient cemetery of Nea Philadelphia, Thessaloniki, c . 480 BC), silhouetted against the Greek flag. The Asia Minor Disaster was the dramatic conclusion of the three-year Asia Minor Campaign, fuelled by the irredentist Great Idea (Megali Idea). A fierce counterattack by the Turks in August 1922 led to the collapse of the front and the withdrawal of the Greek troops, which had landed in Smyrna with the Allies’ authorisation in 1920 and then advanced inland into Anatolia. In September 1922, the Turks burned down Smyrna, forcing thousands of Greeks to abandon their ancestral homes and flee across the Aegean. The toll was tragic: thousands of deaths and casualties, pillaging, and the eradication of the Greek element from Asia Minor. Greece received a huge wave of refugees, especially after the Lausanne Treaty of 1923 and the convention on the exchange of populations. The refugee question would dominate political, social and economic developments in interwar Greece. The refugees gradually assimilated into Greek society, which they enriched with their spirit of enterprise and their culture and traditions, while always keeping alive the memory of their lost homeland.

Hippocrates of Cos is regarded as the father of Western medicine for basing the art of healing on rational principles and liberating it from divine causality and superstition. He perceived man as a whole entity, and health as resulting from multiple factors, including environmental and dietary ones. The Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of works left by Hippocrates and his students, deals with practically all branches of medicine and systematically records clinical symptoms and treatments, always in line with the principle “to do good, or [at least] to do no harm”. The Hippocratic Oath remains the guide to medical ethics and practice to this day.

A student of Plato’s and tutor to Alexander the Great, Aristotle was one of the great figures of ancient Greek philosophy. Born in Stageira, Chalkidiki, Aristotle spent many years in Athens, where, after leaving Plato’s Academy, he later founded a school of his own, the Lyceum. Distancing himself from the idealism of the Academy, Aristotle believed that true knowledge should be acquired through empirical observation and sense perception. His work laid the foundations for numerous disciplines, such as logic, physics, biology, psychology, ethics, rhetoric and political science. His influence was immense until the Renaissance, spreading across major civilisations, from the Arab to the Western European.

Archimedes was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily, where he lived most of his life and died in 212 BC during the city’s capture by the Romans. It is very likely that young Archimedes studied in Alexandria, Egypt, the centre of learning for the Greek world. He is remembered as the greatest mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer of his time. According to the famous anecdote, when Archimedes figured out the physical law of buoyancy (“Archimedes’ principle”) while in his bath, such was his excitement that he forgot to dress and took to the street naked, shouting “eureka”. He pushed the boundaries in a number of fields, primarily in mathematics with his method for accurately approximating the value of π (“Archimedes’ constant”), but also in engineering with his law of the lever and in hydraulics with his major breakthroughs. He is credited with numerous inventions, such as the hydraulic screw pump (known as the Archimedes’ screw) and the compound pulley. He also famously used his ingenuity to help defend his city against the Romans, building a number of innovative defensive devices to destroy their warships.

Penelope Delta was a pioneer of children’s literature in Greece and perhaps the most important Greek woman in turbulent times for Hellenism, with rich philanthropic activity. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, she was daughter of Emmanuel Benakis, later mayor of Athens and national benefactor, and wife of Phanariote merchant Stephanos Deltas. She became close friends with the leading statesman of the time, Eleftherios Venizelos, and had a passionate romance with Ion Dragoumis, which remained platonic.
Encouraged by poet Kostis Palamas, Penelope Delta wrote historical novels for children, with themes related to contemporary national issues (In the Heroic Age of Basil II: Emperor of Byzantium, For the sake of the fatherland, The secrets of the swamp), as well as other books, including A tale without a name, Trelantonis, Mangas and The life of Christ. She aspired, as she said, to “awaken in Greek children noble and lofty ideals”, instilling in them such values as patriotism, friendship and love. Generations of Greek children have been raised with her books, which remain popular. Penelope Delta took her own life when the Nazis entered Athens in 1941.

Pella supplanted Aigai as the capital of the Macedonian state at the turn of the 5th and 4th centuries BC and soon evolved into a major political, economic and cultural centre in Greece. The birthplace of Alexander the Great, Pella reached its peak during the Hellenistic period. The rich archaeological finds, notably the palace complex, temples and sumptuous private houses, provide a wealth of information about the city’s layout, architecture and economic life. The mosaic floors and the wall-paintings, rare surviving samples of ancient Greek painting, attest to the prosperity of the city and its inhabitants. Pella fell to the Romans in 168/167 BC and began to lose importance once the seat of the Roman province of Macedonia, created in 148 BC, was transferred to Thessaloniki. Pella was destroyed by an earthquake, most probably in the early 1st century BC.

UNESCO-listed since 1989, Olympia is one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, with its Temple of Zeus, Temple of Hera (Heraion), palaestra and gymnasium. It was already a centre of worship to Olympian Zeus in the 11th century BC and became the venue of the Olympic Games in the 8th century BC, with the sacred truce providing the participants safe passage to the games. The so-called “treasuries”, erected to house the votive offerings of the various city-states, attest to the prestige that Olympia enjoyed throughout the Greek world, from Sicily and Magna Graecia to Northern Africa and ancient Byzantium. Participation in the Games was at first reserved only to Greeks, but in the Roman era was opened up to all the nations of the empire, turning the Olympics into a truly international event. With the modern revival of the Games in 1896, Olympia has become a universal symbol of fair play, sportsmanship and peaceful co-existence.

The ancient city of Messene was built in 369 BC at the foot of mount Ithomi, sacred to the Messenians, after the Spartans had suffered a crushing defeat to the Thebans under Epameinondas at the battle of Leuktra (371 BC), which led to the Messenians’ liberation. The city was surrounded by a 9.5 km-long fortification wall, with two gates, the Laconian and the Arcadian. Although the former no longer stands, the latter is now the site’s emblematic monument, winning a Europa Nostra Diploma in 2005 for its excellent restoration. Archaeological excavations, first launched in the late 19th century and resumed since 1986 under Professor Petros Themelis, include a vast programme of impressive restorations. These allow the visitor to form a vivid and accurate picture of the most important public buildings, including the Arsinoe fountain, the Asclepieion building complex, the stadium with the mausoleum of the Saithidae family, the gymnasium, the theatre and the odeon (also called ecclesiasterion, i.e. assembly hall).

Delos is a small island of the Cyclades, so named because of the circle (cyclos) they form around it. Sacred in antiquity for being the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Delos was so revered that it was spared even by the invading Persians. In the 5th century BC, the island became the seat of the First Athenian League and of its common treasury, until Pericles moved it to Athens. The Athenians reorganised the Delia festival in honour of Apollo and made Delos a leading panhellenic sanctuary. Declared a free port by the Romans, Delos would become a major trading hub until its sack by Mithridates, king of Pontus, from which it never recovered. Systematic excavations by the École française d’Athènes began in 1873. Delos is an archaeological site in its entirety, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. With its famous Terrace of the Lions and the ruins of the ancient city scattered across the serene landscape, unspoilt by modern civilisation to this day, Delos exudes an air of sacredness and offers visitors a unique experience, totally different from the bustle of neighbouring Mykonos.

Cape Sounion, one of the most iconic landmarks of Attica, is closely associated with Athenian mythology. According to legend, this is where king Aegeus leapt to his death, mistakenly believing that his son Theseus had perished in Crete. The most important monument at Sounion is the Doric temple of Poseidon, built from locally quarried marble around 444-440 BC. The temple had 34 columns, only 15 of which still stand today. It is most probably the work of the same architect who designed the Theseum, the Temple of Ares in Acharnae and the Temple of Nemesis in Rhamnous, given the strong similarities between the four temples. The temple featured a frieze depicting the Battle of the Centaurs, the Battle of the Giants and the labours of Theseus. Owing to its spectacular position, the temple has been admired and repeatedly depicted by travellers and artists, and continues to attract thousands of visitors every year.

50 euro The Heraion of Samos 2019 Proof

The Temple of Hera (Heraion) on the island of Samos, place of Hera’s birth and nuptials with Zeus, is one of the most important sanctuaries to Hera in Greece. The cult of the Samian Hera dates as far back as to the Bronze Age. The first great Temple of Hera, measuring one hundred feet in length (“hekatompedon”), was erected in the 8th century BC and rebuilt in the 7th century BC. It was replaced by a new, colossal structure (52.5 m x 105 m), with a double colonnade on all sides (dipteral), built in 570-560 BC by architects Rhoikos and Theodoros. This unique temple, a masterpiece of Ionic architecture, was destroyed by an earthquake just years after its completion. Under the tyrant Polycrates, construction began of a new dipteral temple of even larger dimensions (55.16 m x 108.63 m), supported by 155 columns of 20 m in height. Although never completed, the ‘Polycrates temple’ was admired throughout antiquity. The exquisite offerings from the entire then-known world unearthed at the site attest to the sanctuary’s world renown. UNESCO inscribed the Heraion of Samos on the World Heritage List in 1992.
50 euro The Portara of Naxos 2021 Proof

Portara, the trademark monument of Naxos, stands atop the islet of Palatia, connected today with Naxos by a causeway. This huge marble gate was the entrance to a monumental Ionian temple (to Dionysus or Apollo), 59 m. long and 28 m. wide. This ambitious project, left unfinished, was launched by Lygdamis, tyrant of Naxos, in the 6th century BC, in an attempt to rival similar buildings of the time, such as the Olympieion of Athens and the Heraeon of Samos. Portara, roughly 6 m. high and 3.5 m. wide, is made of four blocks, each weighing 20 tonnes. A Christian church was built on the temple’s ruins, and its building blocks were reused by the Venetians for the castle of Naxos. However, Portara remains intact and continues to greet visitors arriving at Naxos.

Euro-area citizens and residents have selected the winning design of a new euro coin (€2) issued in January 2012 to commemorate 10 years of euro banknotes and coins. Close to 35.000 people voted in an online competition from a choice of five designs that had been pre-selected by a professional jury following a design competition among citizens from the whole euro area. The new commemorative 2-euro coin will be issued by all euro-area Member States. It is estimated that some 90 million of these coins will be put into circulation. The winning design symbolizes the way in which the euro has become a true global player in the last ten years and its importance in ordinary people’s lives (represented by the people in the design), trade (the ship), industry (the factory) and energy (wind power stations).

The history and fate of the ‘Great Island’ of Crete were always inextricably connected with those of mainland Greece. Strategically situated between Europe, Asia and Africa, Crete fell to a series of conquerors, from the Romans and the Saracens to the Venetians and the Ottomans. Union with the modern Greek state was hard won by the Cretans after several violent uprisings, including the Cretan Revolt of 1866 marked by the selfsacrifice of hundreds of besieged at the Arkadi Monastery. After the revolt of 1897-98, the island was declared an autonomous ‘Cretan State’, with Prince George of Greece appointed its High Commissioner. Crete was formally integrated into Greece under the Treaty of London in 1913, after the Balkan Wars of 1912-13.

The Athenian philosopher Plato (427-347 B.C.) was the most distinguished disciple of Socrates and the one most credited with preserving the Socratic teachings for posterity in his Dialogues. Upon his return to Athens from a first journey to Italy in 387 B.C., he founded a philosophical school in the area of Academia (today’s Kolonos) named after the local hero Academos. For nearly 1,000 years (until 529 A.D.), the Academy enjoyed a reputation for excellence, building on and renewing the teachings of its founder. The ideas of the Academy were transmitted to the Arab world and, from there, to Medieval Europe. The word academy and its derivatives are now used in almost all languages for notions associated with higher learning, the scholarly community and prestigious cultural institutions.

Count Santorre di Santarosa (1783-1825) was a military officer and politician from Piedmont, Italy, and an ardent patriot, who fought many battles for Piedmont’s independence from Napoleonic France. A champion of Italy’s unification, he was inspired by democratic-liberal ideas that brought him into conflict with autocratic regimes; he joined the Carbonari, and in 1821 played a leading role in a constitutional movement in Piedmont. After the failure of the revolt, he was arrested but escaped, ending up in Great Britain, where he came in contact with the London Philhellenic Committee. Profoundly moved by the Greeks’ struggle for freedom, he decided to travel to Greece in 1824. He joined the Greek army as a simple soldier with the alias Derossi. In 1825, Santarosa participated in the Pylos campaign against Ibrahim, landing on Sphakteria island on 7 May. In the battle that followed on the next day, fighting heroically, he was killed, along with many others.

Laskarina Pinotsi (better known as Bouboulina, after her second husband’s surname) was born in Constantinople in 1771 and grew up on the maritime island of Spetses. She inherited an immense fortune from her two husbands, Dimitrios Giannouzas and Dimitrios Bouboulis, and spent it all to finance the Greek Revolution. She was one of the few women to be admitted to the Friendly Society (Philike Etaireia), which masterminded the revolt. As soon as she was initiated, she started to procure military equipment, also building the 18-gun brig Agamemnon as flagship of her flotilla. At the same time, she recruited and paid for a private army of fellow islanders from Spetses. Bouboulina’s flotilla participated in the siege of Nafplio, where she later settled on land donated by the Greek government in recognition of her services. She also took part in the sieges of Monemvasia and Tripolitsa. However, after the civil war, her plea to the government to release its imprisoned opponent Theodoros Kolokotronis led to her banishment to Spetses. She was killed there in a family feud in 1825.

A student of Plato’s and tutor to Alexander the Great, Aristotle was one of the great figures of ancient Greek philosophy. Born in Stageira, Chalkidiki, Aristotle spent many years in Athens, where, after leaving Plato’s Academy, he later founded a school of his own, the Lyceum. Distancing himself from the idealism of the Academy, Aristotle believed that true knowledge should be acquired through empirical observation and sense perception. His work laid the foundations for numerous disciplines, such as logic, physics, biology, psychology, ethics, rhetoric and political science. His influence was immense until the Renaissance, spreading across major civilisations, from the Arab to the Western European.

Euripides was the youngest of the three great Athenian tragedians of the 5th century B.C. and, as has been said, the most tragic. He reached manhood during the classical age of rhetoric, sophistic and philosophy, living at a time of rapid changes and major achievements in all spheres of culture. Influenced by the new currents, Euripides attempted a novel and bolder treatment of the myths on which the plot of Greek tragedies was almost always built, raising moral questions that are still difficult to answer today. A distinctive characteristic of his art was the realistic portrayal of his heroes and their passions. The fact that Euripides was awarded fewer victories at the dramatic festivals of Athens than his counterparts Sophocles and Aeschylus suggests that his radical approach caused unease among the Athenian public. Towards the end of his life, Euripides retired to the court of Archelaos, king of Macedon, where he wrote his last masterpiece, the tragedy Bacchae.

Archimedes was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily, where he lived most of his life and died in 212 BC during the city’s capture by the Romans. It is very likely that young Archimedes studied in Alexandria, Egypt, the centre of learning for the Greek world. He is remembered as the greatest mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer of his time. According to the famous anecdote, when Archimedes figured out the physical law of buoyancy (“Archimedes’ principle”) while in his bath, such was his excitement that he forgot to dress and took to the street naked, shouting “eureka”. He pushed the boundaries in a number of fields, primarily in mathematics with his method for accurately approximating the value of π (“Archimedes’ constant”), but also in engineering with his law of the lever and in hydraulics with his major breakthroughs. He is credited with numerous inventions, such as the hydraulic screw pump (known as the Archimedes’ screw) and the compound pulley. He also famously used his ingenuity to help defend his city against the Romans, building a number of innovative defensive devices to destroy their warships.

Aristophanes was the greatest Greek comic playwright of the 5th century BC and eleven of his comedies have survived complete. Comedy in the days of Aristophanes, flourishing in a context of free speech in democratic Athens, was strongly political. In his works, Aristophanes criticised the failings of his city, speaking out against the war (Acharnians, Peace, Lysistrata) and deriding his fellow citizens for their flaws (Wasps, Birds). He also caricatured prominent figures of his time (Socrates in Clouds, Euripides in Thesmophoriazusae and Cleon in Knights) and even reflected on a poet’s role in society (Frogs). Herodotus was first described by Cicero as the Father of History. The only work he has written seems to be History. Pindar of Thebes was the ancient Greek lyric poet whose work is best preserved. Although he composed various genres of choral poetry (dithyrambs, hymns, laments), of which only fragments remain, he is best known for his epinikia, i.e. victory odes that he wrote on commission in honour of winners at Panhellenic games. His four books of victory odes (the Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean Odes) have survived complete. His patrons included important figures of his time (Hieron of Syracuse, Theron of Akragas, Diagoras of Rhodes). Pindar would typically praise the victor’s birthplace and its local heroes and deities, his family and personal virtues. Pindar has been admired since antiquity for his sublime and grandiloquent style, his bold use of language and the seriousness he attached to his own art.

Euclid is considered the father of geometry. He lived in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I and must have flourished about 300 BC. His central work was the Elements, where he presented the fundamental concepts and principles of geometry and, based on five indemonstrable postulates or axioms (e.g. two points determine one and only one straight line), managed to summarise the geometric wisdom of the time in a comprehensible and coherent system, named Euclidean geometry in his honour. His influence was so immense that it was not until the 19th century that a non-Euclidean geometry was developed. He also wrote Optics, Catoptrics, Conics, etc. They say that when Ptolemy once asked him if there was in geometry any shorter way than that of the Elements, he replied that there was no royal road to geometry.

Archimedes’ screw is a brilliant device used for raising and transporting water. Archimedes is said to have invented it during his stay in Egypt, probably in view of farmers’ need to utilise Nile water for irrigation purposes. It is essentially a hollow tube that contains a spiral or helix that winds its way up. When the lower end of the tube is placed in water and the screw is turned, either manually or mechanically, water trapped within its coils rises until it reaches the top of the tube and pours out into irrigation ditches. The invention is described by the Roman architect Vitruvius, while Diodorus Siculus says that it was also used for draining water from mines. For its simplicity and ingenuity, the device has been popular over time and is still used today in similar applications.

Born in Miletus, on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, Thales (c. 624-540 BC) was the first known Greek mathematician, the first Greek philosopher and one of the seven sages of antiquity. Breaking with mythological interpretations and believing that the world can be explained as a set of natural processes, he considered water, origin of all, in the spirit of natural philosophy that he pioneered. Thales excelled in cosmology, astronomy, physics and geometry. One of his best known contributions to mathematics is Thales’ theorem, or basic proportionality theorem. Thales was said to have calculated the height of the pyramids and predicted the solar eclipse of 585 BC. According to an anecdote, Thales fell into a well while stargazing. His importance as a thinker is enormous, as he was first in the long tradition of European philosophy and introduced the mathematical study of natural phenomena.
