Greece copper-nickel UNC coin 2 euros, 10 years euro, date 2012. Roll 25 pieces. Euro-area citizens and residents have selected the winning design of a new euro coin (€2) issued in January 2012 to commemorate 10 years of euro banknotes and coins. Close to 35.000 people voted in an online competition from a choice of five designs that had been pre-selected by a professional jury following a design competition among citizens from the whole euro area. The new commemorative 2-euro coin will be issued by all euro-area Member States. It is estimated that some 90 million of these coins will be put into circulation. The winning design symbolizes the way in which the euro has become a true global player in the last ten years and its importance in ordinary people’s lives (represented by the people in the design), trade (the ship), industry (the factory) and energy (wind power stations).

Greece copper-nickel UNC coin 2 euros, 100 years from the union of Crete with Greece, date 2013. Roll 25 pieces. The history and fate of the ‘Great Island’ of Crete were always inextricably connected with those of mainland Greece. Strategically situated between Europe, Asia and Africa, Crete fell to a series of conquerors, from the Romans and the Saracens to the Venetians and the Ottomans. Union with the modern Greek state was hard won by the Cretans after several violent uprisings, including the Cretan Revolt of 1866 marked by the selfsacrifice of hundreds of besieged at the Arkadi Monastery. After the revolt of 1897-98, the island was declared an autonomous ‘Cretan State’, with Prince George of Greece appointed its High Commissioner. Crete was formally integrated into Greece under the Treaty of London in 1913, after the Balkan Wars of 1912-13.

After the end of World War I and the Treaty of Neuilly (1919), Western Thrace was ceded to Greece. In 1920, the Greek army triumphantly entered Thrace, which has since been an integral part of the Greek state.

The unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece was the first expansion of the modern Greek State’s borders. After centuries of foreign rule under the Venetians, French, Russians and British, the islands became an integral part of the national territory in 1864, when the British ceded them to Greece on the occasion of the accession of King George I to the Greek throne.

The Athenian philosopher Plato (427-347 B.C.) was the most distinguished disciple of Socrates and the one most credited with preserving the Socratic teachings for posterity in his Dialogues. Upon his return to Athens from a first journey to Italy in 387 B.C., he founded a philosophical school in the area of Academia (today’s Kolonos) named after the local hero Academos. For nearly 1,000 years (until 529 A.D.), the Academy enjoyed a reputation for excellence, building on and renewing the teachings of its founder. The ideas of the Academy were transmitted to the Arab world and, from there, to Medieval Europe. The word academy and its derivatives are now used in almost all languages for notions associated with higher learning, the scholarly community and prestigious cultural institutions.

The Greeks’ self-sacrifice, following Leonidas’s refusal to surrender his arms with the famously defiant retort “Come and take them” («Μολών λαβέ»), is a timeless inspiration for every nation fighting for freedom.

Greece copper-nickel UNC coin 2 euros, 30th anniversary of the European Flag, date 2015. Roll 25 pieces. The European flag was officially established in 1985, by decision of the leaders of the ten Member States of the then EEC, based on a design adopted by another European organisation, the Council of Europe, for its own use. The flag consists of twelve golden stars in a circle on a blue background. The stars symbolise the ideals of solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe, while the circle is a symbol of unity. The number of stars does not denote the number of member countries, but the number twelve traditionally represents a perfect circle.

Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614), better known as El Greco, was born in Crete, where he first trained as a painter, before studying under Titian in Venice. In 1577, he settled in Toledo, Spain, where he was to create his more famous masterpieces. Considered a forerunner of modernism, he influenced several 20th-century artists.
