The Battle of Crete (20 May – 1 June 1941) was one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II. After occupying the rest of Greece, the Germans launched an unprecedented airborne operation on Crete, spearheaded by parachutists who were to seize the airfields so that ground troops could then be landed. The island was defended by Cretan civilians, the remnants of the Greek Army (without its Cretan Division, stranded on the mainland), as well as British, Australian and New Zealand allies. After suffering heavy losses on day one of the Battle, the Germans seized the Maleme airfield on day two and thereafter occupied the entire island. The heroic resistance of the Cretan people won them worldwide admiration, but also led to harsh German reprisals.

20,00
Greek silver proof coin 5 euros colored, for the endemic flora of Greece, Campanula saxatilis, maximum number of pieces 5.000, Bank of Greece mint, issued in 2021. Campanula saxatilis subsp. saxatilis is an endemic plant of Crete, found mainly in coastal areas of the western part of the island. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in crevices and fissures of rocks and gorges and, occasionally, on the walls of ruined castles and monasteries, at altitudes of up to 400 m. from sea level. It flowers from April to early June. It is listed in The Red Data Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece as Vulnerable (VU), due to its small total population and the limited area occupied by its subpopulations. On the islands of Kythira and Antikythira occurs another subspecies, Campanula saxatilis subsp. cytherea, which differs by its larger and broader tubular flowers. The distribution of the species indicates a close phytogeographical relationship between Crete and these two islands.

Original price was: 180,00 €.Current price is: 160,00 €.
Greek collectible gold proof coin with a face value of 50 euros, for the cultural heritage of The Portara of Naxos, maximum number of 1,500 pieces, Bank of Greece mint, issue in 2021. Portara, the trademark monument of Naxos, stands atop the islet of Palatia, connected today with Naxos by a causeway. This huge marble gate was the entrance to a monumental Ionian temple (to Dionysus or Apollo), 59 m. long and 28 m. wide. This ambitious project, left unfinished, was launched by Lygdamis, tyrant of Naxos, in the 6th century BC, in an attempt to rival similar buildings of the time, such as the Olympieion of Athens and the Heraeon of Samos. Portara, roughly 6 m. high and 3.5 m. wide, is made of four blocks, each weighing 20 tonnes. A Christian church was built on the temple’s ruins, and its building blocks were reused by the Venetians for the castle of Naxos. However, Portara remains intact and continues to greet visitors arriving at Naxos.

Blister Hellenic Euro coin set 2021 BU Naxos

Blister, Official issue Hellenic euro coin set, for Naxos, maximum number of pieces 10,000, Bank of Greece mint, issued in 2021. Naxos is the largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades. Dominating its geography is Mount Zas (1,022 m.), whose name alludes to the ancient worship of Zeus. According to myth, it was on Naxos that Dionysus wed Ariadne, abandoned there by Theseus on his way back to Athens from Crete. The island is rich in mineral resources, notably marble and emery, mined since antiquity. In the Bronze Age, Naxos was a major centre of the Cycladic Civilisation, while in the Classical Age it fell into the sphere of Athenian influence. After the Crusaders partitioned the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Marco Sanudo occupied the island in 1207 and established the Duchy of Naxos, which came to comprise most of the Aegean islands. Following the Greek War of Independence, Naxos was included in the first Greek State. Today, Naxos is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its exquisite beaches, traditional villages and renowned local produce.
